Why not release BB10 as-is to Playbook Now either official or Beta?

We've pretty much been beta testing QNX out for RIM anyways and what I've seen in the demos seems to be a greatly improved browser, and our apps should still be compatible. 2.1 just doesn't seem exciting at all after seeing the BB10 demos yesterday, and I feel like it is just a "here now STFU" offering from RIM. I'd be fine whitelisting my Playbook and throwing BB10 on for beta.

I no this won't happen but I just want RIM to do something as "frequent" updates that they told us about at launch has not really happened.

Even though what we got on the devAlphas is awesome, it is far from consumer ready, even far from 50,000+ beta user ready, the controlled release with devAlpha's is giving them way more beta testing than I suspect they are equipped to handle

If it wasn't for all the people with death watches and hoping to see RIM fail they might not have been playing so safe.

RIM is testing BB10 side-by-side on the PlayBook a long with the Dev and Production devices. Therefore, we know that it works!

However, there is one thing. BB10 on the Dev Alpha A is slow (compared to the Dev Alpha B). I assume this is because the Dev Alpha and the PlayBook are using TI OMAP processors, whereas the Dev Alpha B and production devices are using the new QualComm S4 processor (or possibly even S4 Pro).

BB10 needs to be refined, so it works on both older and newer processors. BlackBerry Hub needs to be finished. And, there are many other surprises RIM has not even hinted on. Things like Video Editor (Storymaker), Photo Viewer and Editor (similar to Instagram), and even more!

I think that RIM can at least release the BBM version that is on 10.0.9.388 onto the PlayBook. This will cause excitement again for the PlayBook, because you will be able to have BBM on WiFi! I've been using BBM 10 on the Dev Alpha all day and it is amazing, and it works without any carrier services!

So would I need a mifi to have a wifi no matter where I'm at?

I'm not using the hotspot on the phone cause I don't want an additional data charge from the carrier.

But RIM "Owns" the devAlphas we don't yet know if they have devAlpha's registered to a server yet, nor how they interface with the NOC, it is far different for RIM to manage 6-12k devAlphas running BBM than the potential of 1 Million PlayBooks Running BBM in the hands of people far less tech savvy than those with devAlpha's


While the Plan seems to be running BBM through some other service beyond NOC registration and tying it to BBID's how that is implemented or if it is fully implemented yet is unknown.

Doesn't BBM work over wifi on OS7. Im pretty sure I've sent msgs with no carrier service. I just checked and with wifi only i was able to send a bbm to my buddy and its got the checkmark and D, but hes probably in bed so I dont think Ill get the R.

Just because you don't have a carrier signal doesn't mean you're not still registered to the BIS.

the device seeks out the BIS/BES server when ever it has internet access, wifi or carrier.
Go to your carriers BIS page and unregister your phone then try to BBM, you'll see it wont work as of right now

I am curious how much of this has to do with simple service books. Remember, many BlackBerry services require these from the carriers. (using MMS on Tmobile with a Verizon device for instance). However since there is no real way to load these onto a PlayBook device, it would have to come from RIM.

I hope because there is some "adapting " to playbook yet to be done.
I hope the phone and the playbook wont be running the exact same GUI and not take advantage of native features like bezel swiping..

or... maybe there are plans for a PlayBook 2 hardware to coincide with BB10 release?

A next gen playbook II should be in the works. BB10 will run on current playbooks but, like dev alpha B compared to A, it's time for a spec upgrade!

I would like to see a leak of BB10 running on current playbooks [-O<

Does this mean I could send a BBM msg without wifi or carrier signal? I just tried and it didn't go through. But what's stopping my phone from connecting directly to BIS

You need 1 or the other,
As long as a device is registered to a BIS or BES, then while on Wifi one can send BBMs

BBM works on wifi Playbook already. They apparently have plans to release BBM and a Navigator app for PlayBook before it receives BlackBerry10.

I am sure the Next iteration of BBM will be tied to our BBID's so they will be less NOC dependent....

I'm not upgrading my BBM again until I get BlackBerry 10 on a phone.

I guess the big question is not whether RIM should release a beta version of BB10, but regardless of the decision, whether the business model of BB10 would remain intact if they did. Our question is, if they released it, would you download it?

When I started this thread over a month ago I thought that they definitely should release BB10 for Playbook in Beta ASAP. But after seeing how the Open Theft community is pilfering any and all features RIM has shown of BB10, I don't know anymore. I definitely don't think a beta should be released till the phones are out, or until maybe a couple weeks before release.

Haven't read all the comments up to this point, but we've been told outright that there will NOT be a beta prior to the phones launching, so it's not really an option anyway. We're expecting a beta in the few months following launch, probably following the keyboard phone launch even, and release on the PlayBook would obviously be after that. (My best guess so far is early summer.)

I wouldn't mind a release of BB10 , but RIM must never (again) release anything until it is completely baked .... "as is" is not a good idea.
