Torch 9850 OS Update from VZW

For those interested, it appears that Big Red (VZW) has finally got around to approving a new "official" carrier OS. It appears to be OS 7.1.0.1737 -- probably not anything new than what has been previously found with other previous released OS's, but I will update my findings, and encourage others to do so here as well.

@kbz1960 - yup, it is .580 -- so, probably nothing new, it is probably just the "official" from VZW. It is nice to finally have it though! <:-P

The only thing that hasn't worked is that my word substitution entries can't be restored! Even tried from a previous backup, and no-dice -- anybody have any ideas? @Ubizmo? @StephenBB81?

Does bb protect back those up?

@kbz1960 -- nope. From what I found from hunting around online was that basically if you get to that point, you're screwed. It either works, or doesn't, and this problem cropped up in OS 6 -- and apparently it is still a problem. There is an app that will back it up for you, but of course, I didn't go looking for that until I found out I couldn't restore my Word Substitution database. Luckily, I didn't have a heck of a lot in there, and I've been wanting to redo some things anyway, so, there ya go.

Ah. I guess that's the way it goes sometimes. I wish RIM gets this backup thing figured out quick, another thing that gives people something to crap on.

So, just a quick update for those that may be looking at this thread for os updates -- nothing is new from the released .580 OS from Sprint -- Battery Saving Mode, and Application Analyzer are a bit different, and not in the "Advanced Settings" anymore, Parental Controls appeared, also the option appeared in BBDM to sync my Media via Wifi...

Caution -this is a very long update process (2 hours for me).

Findings for me - Major:
-- lost the auto rotate screen alignment. I'm going to reboot and see what happens (that fixed it)
Other:
--the auto data backup steps got locked up about an hour into the process, and had not cleared by morning. So I had to do a battery pull and lost some of the data in the auto backup process, requiring me to do some manual restoring from BB Desktop.
--lost settngs for World Clock (I sent them feedback to create a save function)
--needed to reenter my BeBuzz authorization code, as always

I still get one java error notice on restart, and S PhotoEditor message, as I had been getting previously. That app will be deleted.

I downloaded on the phone thru WiFi (maybe 40 minutes) after making a backup on BBDM. Then the phone it went into a backup sequence on its own that I'm not sure that I ever saw before - going thru & backing up different components (to SD card I presume). That took a long time and it locked up in the middle of the process (after maybe another 45 miniutes) so I left it overnight. In the morning it was still stuck on the same component backup (shoot me I didn't make a note), so I rebooted. Then it really started to load the new OS, load the backed up data, want a restart, etc.
It is probably faster all done thru the Desktop. Thanks for the big hint!

Huh. Yeah, I would just stick with plugging in your BB to your computer/laptop, and then doing the update via BBDM -- I've seen multiple reports online that updating OTA or via WiFi, while they work, it can be painfully slow -- as well as seeing some very strange results. So, I just stick with usb-ing in and updating via BBDM.

I downloaded it OTA. It did take long! I went to bed and left it to work after waiting about an hour. All was good in the morning. I pulled the battery and then reregistered an app or two- reentered my passwords and I was good to go.

On a side note- I kept getting a notification the vlingo was using my resourses so I deleted it for now. (Don't use it much anyway). Did anyone else with vlingo find this?

@lanarjf - i have vlingo installed - I haven't used it yet, so I'll give it a go, and let you know what I find.

Some more findings:
- battery life seems to be a bit better

- device seems to be running a bit smoother, but that is pretty standard when doing a reload of the os

- in clock mode, the alarm button now looks more like a button instead of being "flush" - makes it a little more intuitive to use

- when device is plugged in, and you have "bedside mode" set to a certain time, if you switch apps to, let's say "messages," it exits out of bedside mode, then when you switch back to the clock, it automatically enters bedside mode again

- also, @lanarjf I've been running Vlingo for about a day or so, and it hasn't been flagged by the application resource monitor...how long were you running Vlingo before it got flagged?

I have always had it on the phone @MissoulaMarinerFan. Just started popping up when I put on this new os. I deleted it and now I added it back and didn't get any notification yet of it using "resources". We shall see how it goes......

Since updating, I have noticed...
--when it does lock up, it is only for a short few seconds (used to be longer).
Fyi as I have written before, I haven't the extended time to figure out what app is doing this. So I'm just living with it. Likely it is something that runs in the background or has a signaling feature.

--bb Travel is acting weird. Not getting any flight updates for a day and then getting old one es and/or locking on the opening screen. Need to reload today.

Problem with BB Travel
Ever since upgrading the OS on my Torch 9850. I haven't been able to open BB Travel. It holds at the initial logo screen no matter how long I wait. A backspace will remove it, so the whole phone isn't locked up, just BB Travel.
I also get the red symbol on the app icon - that it has updates. But can't open it.
I tried removing and reloading twice - but still no opening.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

@glassofpinot -- weird, I have BB Travel installed, and I haven't had any problems with it...I once had a problem similar to this with BlackBerry App World and BBM. I know this is probably old hat, but, have you tried:

1. Uninstalling --> Battery Pull -->, then making sure it doesn't show up in your applications list on your BB?

2. Re-installing -->, Set permissions to "allow" for BB Travel --> Battery Pull

If one and 2 don't/haven't worked, I would:

3. Connect your BB to PC/Laptop -->, fire up BB Desktop Manager, and try removing it from there, -->then re-installing using OTA via App World

--When I was having similar issues with BBAW and BBM, I hooked up to BBDM, and saw that there were 2/3 iterations of BBM and/or BBAW. It took a little bit, but I uninstalled each iteration via BBDM; disconnected my BB, Battery Pull, then was able to install the newest versions of each via BBAW.
